Inej’s mother is as short and lean as her daughter, her thick black hair streaked with chunks of silver and white, caught in a long braid down her back. Her eyes are dark and wide, and her mouth is steady. When Kaz doesn't immediately join them at the table, she crosses her arms and raises an expectant eyebrow.
To his right, he hears Inej stifle a snicker into her hand as her eyes flicker between her mother and Kaz.
Amara Ghafa is not in the least bit intimidated by Kaz Brekker, or his reputation, or his fine dark suits.
She looks pointedly at the seat next to Inej. “Join us for dinner, Mr. Brekker.”---

Time spent creating this plan had taken up almost a month’s worth of days and nights. Neither of them had slept more than four bells, too caught up in perfecting the swindling.
