“What do you mean ‘not even in a relationship’?” He asks. Soap stares back at him blankly.
“What do ye mean what do I mean?”
“I gave you a ring.”
“When the fuck- what?”

Simon hadn’t truly understood the weight of those words until his family was slaughtered a few months later; until he had to stand in front of a tiny headstone where a six year old was buried six feet under, an excruciating kind of pain tearing through him as he knelt on muddy dirt.

He thinks of Roba’s words again when Soap pauses at the edge of his bed with his t-shirt in his hand and turns back to look at Ghost with a hesitant expression.
“I ship out early tomorrow for that mission with Gaz,” he starts, fiddling with the fabric. He looks at Ghost as if waiting for him to realize what he’s asking without having to say it. Ghost stares back in confusion.
“Okay…”
“Well I won’t really get ta see ye again for two weeks. I was wondering if maybe I could…I dinnae ken. Maybe spend the night?”
“Johnny…” Ghost mutters.
Soap lets out a forced laugh.
“Figured ye might not want that, just thought I’d ask. I’ll see ye in two weeks, then-“

“You were very bold today, telling people my bedroom light is broken.” Apo brings up teasingly. Mile huffs a laugh beside him.
“It was only fair, you told everyone that you’ve asked about the color of my boxers. Might as well have announced that we’ve had phone sex.”
“That’s not what people are going to assume!”
“Why the hell else would you ask someone what color underwear they’re wearing!?” Mile does tear his eyes away from the road then, shooting Apo a bewildered look that is softened by the smile tugging at his lips.
“You’re right,” Apo responds after a moment, and then they both burst into laughter. “It’s so much fun messing with them though,” Apo says when their laughter dies down.
“It is fun. But c’mon, you don’t think they all know the truth by now? We’ve made it so obvious.”

He drives to the airport with an unshakeable urge to pull over and turn around. He smokes four cigarettes in a row before he boards the plane, then chews an entire pack of gum on the flight to try and cover the worst of the smell.
He exits the airport half-hoping that Shane has chickened out of the whole thing. Then he spots him, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel in the most boring suburban dad car Ilya has ever had the misfortune of laying his eyes on, and he’s so happy to see him that his legs feel unsteady beneath his weight.
