I stared up at the ceiling, and the letter from the ComfortUnit. Having free will is a pain in the ass sometimes.
Three messaged me over the feed. “The ComfortUnit needs help.”
My human-imitation code cued me to blink. Three’s drone was creeping closer to my face. Three hadn’t initiated many conversations yet, so this was notable.
I responded to its channel, “Yeah, but I don’t know if I’m the right one to help.”
3.03 seconds passed. Then Three said, “I can help. I’ll go.”

He walked down the steps, carefully so as not to wake the child, and got into the car. Geo patted his shoulder. Bonzle turned in her seat and smiled. Even Fritz was snoring with some calm certainty — everything was okay.
Lou stood on the porch and watched them until the headlights disappeared around the corner. The house fell quiet again, but the silence no longer felt so empty.
It was filled with echoes — voices, footsteps, laughter.
And hope that now they would surely return.

Summary
Too often, the plates of food that Mithrun and Falin made were going uneaten, their hard work to waste no matter how hard they tried to pawn it off. Even Kabru had started to refuse them, eating most of the time with visiting dignitaries and not having room for a fourth meal. A few months into this, Falin found herself once again turning towards the door with a tray in her hand, her cheeks hot from Yaad’s rebuke by her brother’s side, when suddenly a voice stopped her. “Wait.”
She whirled around fast enough that the plate slid on the surface, coming dangerously close to spilling the stew it held. “Yes?”
Yaad looked pensive, the tips of his fingers pressed together, his mouth a thin line barely visible beneath his mustache. As Laios and Falin both watched, he let out a heavy sigh that betrayed his years, his brow softening somewhat. “...I know where you could bring that,” he said quietly.
After her resurrection, Falin takes up cooking alongside Mithrun as a way to learn her body again. Perhaps her efforts will end in more than one person being saved. Written for the Dungeon Dishes Zine.
