Nik didn't know how it happened. He didn't even really realize right away that something had happened. He was getting refreshments, and one of the other party guests was complimenting him on the delicate spray of cherry blossoms that decorated his hair - a gift from his fiancé, the Marquess of Stillmarch, he told them with a shy smile. They were only newly engaged and it was not widely known in society yet, so he took pleasure in letting people know and accepting their congratulations. He heard some flurry of commotion, but it was the ballroom at a huge gala, one of the largest of the season in Highmark - there was always some kind of furor happening somewhere. But then someone started screaming, and he knew it wasn't just a cry of excitement over a new gown. It was a scream of fear, horror, alarm, and it was soon joined by others.

Summary
In another version of Highmark's 1023 social season, things went a little differently: Instead of finding love and freedom from his heavy social and emotional burdens, Lamont Allard, Marquess of Stillmarch, lashed out and murdered his uncle at a public gala.
After being locked away 7 years, he is approached by a representative of his House, and Nerath's intelligence service, to serve his nation in secret. Breaking his isolation may offer him purpose, but it also means turning his face back to the world that once broke him.

Arek stood with his - her - back to the door, wings neatly folded. The same loose brown curls as always tumbled to her shoulders, making San wistful once more. Arek turned when he came in and gave him a smile that cheered him somewhat. "You're drenched, come over by the fire and warm up."
San did so, extending his hands towards the flames. "How was your day?"
"Oh, fine," Arek said idly. She came up behind Sanadhil and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"You'll get wet," San warned her.
"Mm, possibly, you do have that effect on me," she agreed playfully.
