Summary
The sun never rises in Cloud City. Owned by distant gods, the world creaks along in techno-magical paralysis, making Contracts with spirits, and limping along in isolated enclaves while monsters run wild in the Wastes.
Five years ago, Arthur Lester, a private investigator, made a Contract with a Summon called Hastur. The deal? His soul in exchange for the identity of his daughter's murderer. Until the time Arthur's soul is ripe for harvesting, Hastur will give him power, and eventually must find Faroe's killer. If he doesn't, they both die, so failure is not an option.
Hastur, however, is not a normal Summon... and it turns out he's come here and chosen Arthur in order to stop a threat that will destroy the entire universe if it succeeds.
Unfortunately, humans aren't meant to channel power like Hastur's, and Arthur's body is beginning to break down. It's a race against time to solve Faroe's murder and stop the incoming threat before he simply drops dead.

What he finally got was, “Fight me.”
Arthur was hard-pressed not to laugh out loud. Merlin looked so determined, his chin up and eyes narrowed, but he was obviously still high as balls.

Accountability, that was what it was. It was easy enough to condemn her actions from afar while still accepting her usefulness, but now they were all involved. They had all had a hand in what had been done to that stranger, Arthur Lester, the supposed Private Investigator.
Apparently that didn't sit right with any of the others. At least they had finally found the line.

Summary

Jon, the second time 1995 comes around, is still scared - he always is and always will be - but the pressure of the ocean in his mind finally grants him agency. He’s danced to the rhythm and songs the Spider wished him to dance for years and years, without missing a step; but now he’s spent as a puppet, and if he doesn’t let this book ruin his life again he knows there will be no more threads of sticky web hiding in plain sight in his hair. No escape into living oblivion for Gerry anymore. Now he lived on high alert. He'd resigned himself to being hurt, or killed, or occasionally being treated like an actual human being, but he couldn't afford that sort of apathy anymore; Jon was the best thing to ever happen to Gerry, and Jon needed him. The fact that he could focus on how Jon's existence benefited him in spite of the circumstances just drove home how vigilant Gerry had to be to ensure nothing slipped past him.
The Hunters kidnap Jon and Gerry and then Jon and Gerry get codependent about it.
