Summary
Those eyes had been home, once.
They were darker now. Haunted. They flicked between fear and a type of anger that ran bone-deep, vile and vengeful. One moment Bucky would be terrified and shaken, and another he’d be lashing out like an animal. Those eyes held witness to every cruel act, every gush of blood, every loss of innocent life over decades of living damnation. They had seen and they had remembered.
It was in the way Bucky could wield any weapon like an extension of himself. The way he flinched at the sound of doors opening. The way he could rip out chunks of skin and tissue with his teeth. The way he tucked his arm over his ribs when someone's tone shifted. The way he could assess the most efficient way to incapacitate a man within seconds of seeing him, or the silent tears he shed when someone asked him to sit on furniture instead of tucking himself somewhere out of sight.
He was a walking contradiction. A timid, broken thing with the power to kill. A crated fighting dog.

or: Bucky's recovery, but it's far from pretty. Featuring a lot of angst, an exploration of disability, and multiple character studies.Bookmarked by MiladyElessar

Overwhelming of feelings.
Very intense about how to handle disability, guilty, grief, religious expectations, suicide thoughts and HOPE. -

Summary
“From the personal journal of Major General Vasily Karpov—September 1983:
Against advice, I have taken Codename: Winter Soldier to the Middle East as my personal bodyguard. I am getting old and I know there are only a few years left for me, so I wish to spend them watching this twisted creature defend my life.
I almost feel sorry for him, as he tenses up whenever anyone approaches, ready to dive in front of a bullet for me..."Aging Soviet General Karpov takes the Winter Soldier to the Middle East as his personal security/pet assassin. He dies five years later. What happened during those five years? A series of connected one-shots.

Summary
There's a lot of expectation attached to Steve Rogers' name. It's taken him years to prove his own worth - that he's made it so far in the USNA on his own merit and not just because of his father. He's close though - there are only a few more months until he graduates and gets to stand on his own two feet. It's taken a lot of effort to get there, and a lot of sacrifices.
Bucky's beyond the point of expectation. When your father and grandfather have both been President - and your mother nurses political ambitions of her own - brilliance is a foregone conclusion. He's just counting down the final months of his confinement to the glass cage of the White House and he's determined to put that whole world behind him.
But as the days standing between them and their dreams dwindle, Steve comes to realize he might have made one sacrifice too many, and Bucky learns that his freedom comes at a cost he's never going to be able to pay.

Summary
Bucky woke up with a headache, a mouth that tasted like something had died in it, and hands-down, swear-to-god, the most beautiful man he had ever seen asleep in his lap.
Bucky was also, he realized after a moment, strapped down to a hospital bed with about six different monitors making unsynced, equally piercing, beeps. Beyond that he couldn’t quite see—there was a hideous floral curtain pulled around the bed, and while he could just make out figures moving in the room beyond it, the pattern made his head pound even worse the longer he looked at it.
So. That was concerning.
