In hindsight, it takes a bit longer than it should for us to think of the Taumoeba solution to my little food problem. The paragons of intelligence and problem-solving of our respective species? Yeah right. More like a couple of emotional dumbasses.
It would’ve been nice to avoid all of this melodrama, but, spilt milk.
((It takes about a week. That week is filled with the despair of knowing there is nothing you can do to save the being bonded to your soul with actual stardust, and the cosmic fury of knowing he's dying to save you. It is also filled with the awkwardness of a drawn-out self sacrifice, and the cringing shyness of trying to get your precious alien roommate to stop being mad at you for sacrificing yourself for him.
Luckily, we both know it ends in hope.))

Summary
Grace wakes up, alone and confused on a spaceship millions of miles from Earth, with no memory of who he is and how got there. So he does the only thing his distraught, amnesiac human hindbrain can come up with - he get drunk off vodka, and rifles through everyone’s personal belongings.
He makes a mortifying discovery, but doesn't know how useful it will end up being. After he saves two worlds. And reconciles his feelings for his new crewmate.

“I’m just tired today,” I tell him. I’m tired every day, but the pressure of my exhaustion just feels particularly weighty right now, and increasingly heavier every day I carry my children. Our children, I remind myself, as if I could ever forget the five tumbling rock-bodies that grow bigger constantly. And inside of me.
“Grace stay home instead,” Rocky demands without hesitation. “Grace sleep. Grace rest. Rocky watch Grace sleep. Rest, rest, rest.”
“I want to do the class, I’m just— I’m feeling a lot of different things at once, Rock, it’s complicated,” I try to explain. My voice is a little muffled when I stick my head under the stream of water, but it doesn’t ever seem to impact his understanding of me.
“Human gestation too complex, statement,” Rocky grumbles. “Cause problems for Grace. Rocky can’t fix. Rocky fix. Rocky want to fix. Rocky fix for Grace.”

"Will Grace try to eat?"
Grace took a deep breath and nodded, he didn't want to argue with Rocky. Tell him how broken he was really feeling. Tell him how he was missing earth. Tell him he didn't know what to do anymore, but he couldn't. He just didn't have the courage to do so.
…
3 months are still left on the flight plan to Erid and Grace is counting each and every day. Malnutrition, scurvy, loneliness and the missing of earth is tearing his body and mind apart. It seems like pieces of him are breaking off that might never be put together again. Perhaps Grace his mind will give up before his body does. Rocky wonders about that every single day. Frustrations grow between them as there is nothing they can do and nothing they can fix. A hard talk has to take place soon, but it might break the both of them.

Once my tantrum is over, I straighten up and hold my carapace high. Enough of that. I feel a bit better, but not by much. I sit next to Rocky in the medical nest and begin my vigil. I have a job to do.
