Canon divergence with an added A/B/O world -
In July of 2016, while in Moscow, Ilya learns he is being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. His father blames it on his 'poor performances' and sees it as an embarrassment for their family and their country. He wants Ilya to stay in Moscow, but Ilya does not. He leaves immediately and safely reaches Toronto, but once there, he learns that Russia has cancelled his passport and Canada cannot issue a work visa for him until that is cleared up, or other criteria are met that would allow him to become a citizen. Ilya doesn't think there is any way for him to get the visa or become a citizen in the timeframe he has, so he resigns himself to going back to Russia.
But first, he wants to say goodbye to Shane, knowing it will be the last time he sees him.- Language:

Suddenly, there’s the sensation of a hand in his and Ilya smiles, turning to see his mother, Irina. She’s just as beautiful as he remembers. “Hi, mom.”
A sad smile crosses Irina’s face in return - a smile Ilya was all too familiar with as a child. It’s the smile she used when she was trying to cover her pain.
Ilya is confused - he thought his mother might be happy to see him, the way he is happy to see her. “What’s wrong?”
Irina shakes her head a little, staying silent.
“Tell me, please,” Ilya says, a little desperate.
“You need to go home, Ilyushka.” His mother shakes her head again, squeezing his hand. “This is not your home.”

If there was one person or thing on earth that could keep him here, it’s Shane. Ilya knows he’s been lucky to love Shane and be loved by Shane, especially for as long as they have. There’s people who go their whole lifetimes without ever knowing or feeling that sort of love, and Ilya was lucky to find it in this lifetime - he prays he’ll find Shane again in the next one.
But Shane deserves so much more than the broken mind Ilya is living with. Shane deserves to not have to put up with Ilya’s meltdowns and depression spells and crying jags. Shane deserves to be happy. Shane deserves to put his whole focus into someone worth the trouble, and Ilya knows he’s not worth the trouble any more.
