"Give your mother some rest," Robin jokes, head sticking out of the kitchen. On a normal day, Steve would be able to take yet another mom joke, would've followed it with a laugh, or a snarky comment, or just a sigh. But he's in fucking pain right now and can’t find it in him to even pretend to put up a mask.
“Rob,” He croaks, voice coming out weak, feeble, a stark contrast from the bite that laced it earlier. The yellow light shining in the Henderson’s living room is a tad too bright, and Dustin and Erica’s fights, and Robin’s teasing, is a little too much right now, and the floor is swaying like he’s on a moving ship. Coloured spots dance around his vision, and his hands become all tingly, a feeling that then moves down to his shaky legs.

“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty,” Dustin snarks. He rolls his eyes and heaves himself out of the passenger side of the bimmer, slamming the door behind him. He sticks his head through the passenger window, offering Steve a sarcastic sneer. “Have a good nap?”
Steve smacks his lips and swallows hard, but the odd metallic taste doesn’t leave his mouth. Dustin huffs at his lack of response and smacks the flat of his palm against the side of the car. Usually, Steve would reprimand him for that, tell the kid something about the paint job, or dents, but Dustin storms out of Steve’s sight before he can catch up to the situation. Steve’s slumped over the steering wheel, letting it press into the side of his face and his ribs, a radiating ache, but he knows the moment he moves, the pain will flare into something sharp and unbearable.
