    Bobby slows as he nears the kitchen doorway, glancing toward the island where Erik leans. Everything about Erik blends in well with the darkness. The younger man doesn't notice him for a solid moment.
    “You're up late,” Erik murmurs, breaking the air. His voice, roughened by the alcohol, drags over each syllable like an old vinyl record.

    Bobby’s face remains the same, but Erik doesn't miss the way his shoulders tense like he's been spooked. He jolts slightly, fingers tensing where he holds the outside of the doorframe. Hah. Gotcha. 
    Then, the boy steels himself, squaring his broad shoulders. “I couldn't sleep,” he says, voice just above a whisper. “Can I have some of that?” The younger suddenly blurts out, pointing at the cup of spiked punch.

    Erik buries his brother on a Sunday. They had to have a closed casket because the spiral from the vending machine completely obliterated Bobby’s face. Erik died too with every shovel full of dirt thrown into the grave.

    Bobby returns on a Friday. He’s whole and smiling and just the way Erik remembers him. It’s impossible. It’s a miracle. It’s everything Erik wanted when he screamed and screamed into the night to give him his brother back.
