There was silence except for the rain. She knew she wasn’t making any sense, but how could anybody possibly understand? She barely understood it herself. It made her happy to see that look in his eyes, and that was terrifying. It went against every instinct she'd spent years cultivating as she wove in and out of the shadows of Ketterdam. It went against everything she’d had to do to survive.

What starts as an evening of playful teasing turns into a battle with complicated feelings for Inej, but Kaz manages to find the right words to say.

“Coffee?” she asks. Kaz nods, and mumbles something that sounds like a thanks. When Inej smiles, she feels it in every part of her body. After a quick brush against his knuckles, Inej pulls herself from her bed and feels the cold air on her skin; she grabs a shirt and slips it on over her vest before heading out.
(She doesn’t need to wonder. The black fabric is rough and warm, the Kaz-scent of coffee and ink lingers on the collar)
