Summary
Worry thrummed under his skin as he took his position near the door, far from the front of the room where the Dragon Prince allegedly sat. Wei Wuxian could not yet see any of the royals that they were performing for, adding curiosity to the mess of emotions that coiled in the pit of his stomach.
Drums began their steady beat. Along with the other performers, he drew his sword, pointing it upward, parallel to his body in the starting position.
No matter his fears, no matter his current feelings of inadequacy, it didn’t matter anymore. One lesson remained consistent between acrobatics and dancing: the show must go on.

“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji started again, his heart speeding up at saying the birth name aloud. He looked at his lap, picking at his sleeve, as he continued, delicately, “What would the Yiling Patriarch consider equivalent payment to his generosity?”
“Nothing!” Wei Ying said, popping a berry into his mouth and swallowing it alongside Lan Wangji’s composure.
Lan Wangji’s heart rate was quickening for a different reason, one far less desirable.
Gusu Lan had to pay.

“Lost.” Lan Wangji muttered as his ears began heating up again. Pets were unnecessary. They were symbols of wealth, but also pleasure and excess. He was perfectly content to stay away from people who were bought exclusively to be dressed up and debauched to enhance another person’s status, no matter how socially acceptable it was deemed. Neither his uncle nor brother had a pet, and he doubted they would pressure him into having one. If the most he ever saw of what pets did was glimpses of the fancy clothing they wore, he would be happy.

Lan Wangji does gain more experience with pets, not due to purchasing one, but because he becomes one after the Gusu Lan Empire comes crashing down at the hands of rebels.
