Summary
The man pulls the shirt over his head. It’s a little loose around his shoulders. “Micah. Nice to meet you, Lukas.”
Lukas lets his lip quirk up a bit. “Could’ve been in better circumstances, Micah.”
“Hey,” Micah says, “If I had the choice I wouldn’t have been stabbed.”
“You were more than stabbed.”
“Fine— I wouldn’t have been injured. Happy?”
Lukas laughs. “Greatly. You have anywhere important to get to, or do you want to stay for dinner?”
“Dinner sounds lovely.” Micah smiles, and it is beautiful in a way that Lukas knows to be wary of. This is a strange man that Lukas knows nothing about. Lukas smiles anyways—he knows that Micah cannot be the right one, but a fire is a fire and he is so cold.

“Pull me on the sled, August, please?” He exaggerates a begging expression. It still makes something near August’s heart squeeze.
“It’s for the supplies, though,” August argues weakly. He knows he’ll end up pulling Parker, but he likes arguing with him. It’s fun.
Parker huffs. “There’s no supplies on it yet. ‘sides, I’m not even cold. If I get closer to the snow, maybe I will be.
What? “Fine,” August relents, but he’s uneasy. That’s strange, even for Parker—and he’s not cold? He can’t believe that. They’ve gotten used to the cold, but that’s because they’re cold all the time. It’s a sort of numbing chill that’s curled up deep in his skin, sinking to his fucking marrow.
But it’s never quite slipped over into not being cold. That’s—and a half-remembered babysitting class aids him now—that’s a sign of hypothermia.
