“Sonic… why are these photos of you–”
“That’s not me!” Sonic snapped, his eyes glowering down at the photos crushed underneath Shadow’s feet. “That’s not me. Not anymore.” He said, a little quieter this time. The tears fell freely, and all Shadow could do was quietly pick up each photo and place them in a neat stack on the floor. Sonic watched him, his eyes never leaving him as Shadow stayed knelt on the ground.
Shadow could feel the rising panic beginning to spread through him; desperate and frenzied and begging to release the pent up discomfort any way he knew how: anger, pain, force. He could avenge Sonic’s pain and traumas by turning his back on him now and giving into his desires to end Infinite’s life. But that would only be self-satisfying; what would Sonic want? He slowly settled down until he was sitting comfortably on the floor, while Sonic tried to quiet down his angry sobs. “Can you show me,” Shadow asked gently, “who you are?”

Summary
Centuries ago, the Doom Kingdom was cursed by the god Solaris, condemning its inhabitants to an eternity of twilight and despair as punishment for their insatiable bloodlust. In order to keep their people from dying of famine, their leader declared war on the surrounding kingdoms, raiding their territories for food and medicine -- an act that only further pushed them away from any chance at salvation.
Now, after Black Doom's mysterious death, his son, Shadow, was crowned king. With seemingly no end to the death and destruction in sight, Sonic, disguised as a humble jester, is sent to infiltrate the Doom Kingdom and assassinate their ruler, putting an end to the war for good.

Summary
After being on Starfall Islands, Sonic's friends, true to their word, go off and explore the world on their own, which leaves Sonic alone in Tail's workshop to keep an eye on the Master Emerald and himself. Being left alone after the pain of Cyberspace is definitely a good idea.
Time has never ticked by slower. But, with the sudden run into Shadow under the stars, his life starts to pick up once more. But the sudden strange attitude Sonic has does not go unnoticed by the other hedgehog.
With a newfound motivation, and the tired old threat of a new plan from Dr. Eggman once again, Sonic is ready to battle him once again, even if he doesn't have his friends right near him at the moment. Well, except for the three strange friends standing around him as they stare at the documents regarding Eggman's new plans.
