Summary
Somewhere in India, a mother lingers in the doorway of her son’s moonlit bedroom, studying the sweet innocence of his sleeping face to remind herself that Carol’s perverse accusations carry no weight. You are my child, you are mine, only mine.
Carol would like for something to be just hers again. Would kill for it—maybe has already, eleven million times over. And perhaps Laxmi is onto something after all, then, because who wouldn’t sacrifice the entire world for the one they love most?
She drops all pretense and meets Zosia's eyes. However this all is going to end, it will hurt. Carol is quite suddenly sure of it. In the meantime, why not make it a little easier on herself, and on the person who against all odds is still here with her?
