After Eddie’s death, Steve is lost. He hides his and Eddie’s past on and off relationship as he pours whatever is left of him into keeping his friends safe, and fighting the apocalypse that’s landed at their door.
He avoids sleep, too terrified of what he will see, haunted and tormented by dreams of Eddie, dreams that feel all too real. He avoids them until he can’t anymore, wiling to accept anything of Eddie he can have as the world falls apart around him.
When nothing is as it seems, Steve will find that the most horrific hells and the most beautiful hopes are two sides of the same coin. A lost boy returns, battle lines are drawn, and each player must fight a world that is older and stranger than they’d ever thought before.

Summary
When Buck is a little older, if you ask him what love is, he will tell you that it’s catching his sister in his arms and holding her close as she gasps for air. He will tell you it’s the deep brown eyes of a friend he will fall in love with. He will tell you it’s being handed a flower by a little girl in a garden.
He will tell you about his dead brother, and his dead captain that’s really like a dead father, and the grief he shoulders that never goes away, and you’ll be worried and scared and wonder if love is worth it in the end, and Evan Buckley will say –
“That’s just love. Nothing you can do about that.”
Love is a noun. Love is gravity, a whispered name between two people, a tattoo.
Love is a verb. It’s having a meal together, a shared laugh in a crowded bar, a ghost in the bed you curl around.
It’s a garden you tend to. It’s a well loved flower. A plant with roots that reach deep into the earth.
“That’s just the way it is.”

Buck isn’t dead, he’s alive and he’s okay and he’s going to come back. Because if Buck’s gone, if Buck isn’t coming back and he’s leaving them all to live without him, then how will they keep going? How will the earth keep spinning? How will there still be tomorrow?
How will Eddie survive?
But it happened. And Eddie couldn’t stop it. He couldn’t save him, he couldn’t do anything except feel Buck’s pulse.

Eddie takes in one shuddering gasp, and stares back up at the night’s sky and lets out the hollow pain that took over him the moment Buck’s limp hand was pulled from his.
He screams Buck’s name so fearfully, so brutally, so inconsolably, that the universe has no choice but to stop and listen.

Eddie's love transcends time and space, goes beyond the boundaries of the universe, and he finds Buck. He will always find Buck.
And he'll save him, too.

“Hi, I’m Buck, a firefighter with the 136,” for now, the thought crashes through Buck, leaving a sour taste in his mouth. “Uh, you’re both welcome to take a tour with us, if you’d like.” Buck awkwardly scratches at his neck, running a hand through his hair, unsure what else to do, and it spurs the man in front of him to take a large step forward up to Buck’s bed.
“Eddie,” he says, thrusting a hand to him, and Buck reaches over without a second thought. His whole palm feels electric, it smarts and carries the touch of Eddie, Eddie, that Buck feels it completely. He has no idea what’s happening to him. “Edmundo Diaz, but just Eddie though, uh, no one calls me Edmundo. Right. I’m a new nurse here, at Cedars-Senai. Oh –”
