“Ryan,” the kid says out of the blue. “My name’s Ryan.”
Stan glances at him through the mirror. “Nice to meet you, Ryan.” He looks away, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. He’s not really in a mood to force some small-talk, but the silence otherwise is the unbearable kind. “What’s a kid like you doing all the way out here?”
From the corner of his eyes, Stan sees Ryan’s lips twist into a frown. “A bad breakup,” he mutters, like that explains anything at all. After a pause, he clarifies. “I gave my ex my dad’s van.” He rubs the bridge of his nose under his glasses. “I’m… not really sure why.”
“Uh huh,” Stan drawls. “Bad breakups’ll do that to you.”
“It wouldn’t matter,” Ryan blurts out, “if it was just—if it was just about the stupid van, or the stupid breakup—” He cuts himself off with a frustrated noise. “But it’s not. It’s not just that.”
Stan gets the distinct feeling that he’s opened a can of worms he’s not sure he wanted to open in the first place. “Uh huh,” he says again, hoping that his noncommittal response might get across that he really doesn’t need the kid’s entire sob story.
