Summary
Jason clamps down on the panic bubbling at the base of his sternum with a practiced hand and exhales all of his air, intending to settle into a meditative breathing pattern that should help him focus more on his other senses, except-
His breath comes out hot and humid, clouding the space around his mouth and nose and reflecting back on his cheeks, causing his skin to prickle uncomfortably. And when he inhales, it doesn’t quite fill his lungs, the air stale and wet.
It’s recycled air.
Jason involuntarily jerks in place, wobbling back a step.
He counts down five minutes in his head before he starts trying to break himself out – clings to the meager hope of rescue for those 300 agonizing, too-still seconds as he does his best to breathe shallowly and calmly to preserve his air supply. In the end, all it does is make him weaker, make the digging take longer.
Jason’s heart thunders in his chest. Dirt dribbles down onto his face.
OR: When an EMP goes off and Jason's powered-down helmet gets stuck on his head, he realizes a fatal flaw in his design - there's no way for him to breathe inside the helmet without power. Dick and Tim have to resort to desperate measures to save his life.

Summary
Jason Todd was kidnapped at nine-years-old and given two options. Work for his keep, or be forced to to work for his keep.
His life was not pleasant, but Jason was nothing if not a fighter, and dammit if was he going to let the hell around him kill who he was as a person. Or his dreams of growing up and going to college.
Those dreams suddenly came a little more into focus, when his idiot of a pimp accidentally tried to rent him to Bruce Wayne. Poor bastard could have never guessed he was the Batman himself. Heck, not even Jason figured that out, at first. And Batman had practically adopted him.

The kid tries to make a break for it again-but he grabs the kid from under his armpits and holds him up before he can run away and tire himself more. The kid startles- staring at him with wide blue eyes- as if surprised at being picked up.
One of his sclera is red from infection.
He’s mostly skin and bones- too light-
(Almost breakable.)
“We couldn’t sedate him without bloodwork- we don’t want the sedatives to interact with whatever the kid has in his system-“Bruce hums in acknowledgment.
“Hello”, he says softly, the kid’s baby blue eyes widen even further, and he scrambles-making no move to escape- but only to climb up to peer into the lens of the cowl. He whispers, so quietly that he wouldn’t have been able to hear it if he wasn’t inches from his face, “Kitty?”
