She was twelve years old, and she understood it perfectly, and she was certain she would never have cause to think about it differently.
Then a boy arrived.
He was blonde and blue-eyed and looked like he had lost a fight with a lawnmower, and he was unconscious, and he smelled, unmistakably and impossibly, of the deep ocean.
Annabeth stood in the doorway of the infirmary and looked at him for a long moment. Something in her went very still in the way that things go still right before something large and irreversible happens — the held breath before the earthquake, the instant of silence before a wave breaks.
She did not name the feeling. She was twelve. She was the pride of her mother. She was going to be great.
She turned and walked away.
It would not be the last time she would try.

Summary
Osha ignores the hands that graze an inch too close to her in the hallway. She pretends she can’t feel the eyes that crawl up the stretch of back she’s left free of her dress. She absolutely does not look at the way his lips seal around a soup spoon across the dinner table. (She can’t be the only one who thinks the way he tongues the prongs of his fork is a bit excessive.)
Osha tells herself she can soothe the goosebumps trickling down her arms; the drumming in her chest is just stress. She can count the days between now and her wedding on her fingers, and it’s making her nervous is all.
It has absolutely nothing to do with her soon-to-be brother-in-law, Qimir.

Osha struggles to sleep because her upstairs neighbor is very loud. With everything.
Her hand flexes before tightening into a fist. Her heart pounds as she knocks once, twice, and then-
“Oh, hello.”
He’s still dripping from a shower and Osha swallows, her throat dry. “Hi.”
The corners of his lips tilt up and he repeats, “Hi.”
Her eyes flicker down his naked torso and she curses herself because now she knows what he looks like underneath that sweater. “I, um, wanted to see you.”
No!
Osha closes her eyes and shakes her head. “I’m sorry, no, I um-,“
She opens to see him just staring at her. Like this is a totally normal thing for her to be there in the middle of the night.
“You wanted to see me?” His voice is just as deep as it was this morning and she fears that between the towel he wrapped haphazardly across his hips and how she can feel his words on her skin she’s doomed for terrible, disgusting dreams the rest of the week.Bookmarked by Nikkx

“Can’t? Or don’t want to?” Qimir turns from her painting, looking down at her. His dark eyes pierce into hers, full of understanding, perceiving her to a degree that leaves her aching. “What are you so afraid of?”
