    Summary

    "Hey, it's proteins and electrolytes. It could be worse. You're welcome to try to get the machine to dispense something else," Ripley said, leaning against the open edge of his pod. "Coffee. Water."

    "Tequila," Hicks offered. "Margaritas."

    Ripley laughed, a loud and full-body laugh, and Hicks chuckled throatily at her reaction -- and from the walkie-talkie on Ripley's belt loop came the tinny approximation of an android/spaceship clearing his/its throat.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    He’d been presented with a list of options - King of the Dreaming, the Shaper of Forms, Lord of Nightmares, Oneiros, Morpheus - and had gone straight for the one that would let him tack an endearment to the end of every sentence with plausible deniability.

    //

    Dream had taken a small bowl, and delicately fished out all the pieces of boiled carrot as he ate. That was when Hob realised that whatever else Dream was, he was, in some fundamental way, a person. He might show up every hundred years cloaked in high drama and mystery, but he also made a petulant little moue of distaste when he misjudged a lump in the stew.

    //

    While Dream nipped at Hob’s tendons whenever Hob grew too soft with him - love was fine, my own heart’s root apparently not - Hob figured it was injured pride rather than genuine objection.

    Summary

    Morpheus’s expression melts into unreadability. “Would you have come to my rescue again, Hob Gadling?”

    “Yes. God, yes, I would have. Of course, I would have."

    Hob learns where his friend has been, and even Dream of the Endless might, on rare occasion, need a hand.

    She waves behind her and is escorted out the room by the stares of several interested patrons and the unreadable look Dream has focused on her back as if it were a physical thing. Like a predator watching something bigger than itself.

    Summary

    The rumor that Hob Gadling, the human who tricked Death herself into granting him immortality, has finally decided he's lived long enough and consented to die is sweeping through the supernatural community like wildfire. It even spreads to the Dreaming, where Dream handles it about as well as could be expected.

    It is, to say the least, a bit of a shock to Hob Gadling himself, who is still very much alive- and increasingly in need of rescue.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    Dream opens his eyes and shoots him a sharp look, and Hob smiles fondly and tilts his glass at him. “No offense, love, but you are work.”

    //

    He squirms happily into the covers, rolling along the sheets like a cat in a sunbeam. Warm and decadently soft, smelling impossibly of nighttime and black sand. He might be making an embarrassing moaning noise, but frankly he doesn’t care.

    Summary

    The meeting in the pub lasts longer than either of them expect, and Dream lets slip a couple of vague facts that give Hob more information about his friend than the previous six centuries put together. He learns that he’s something of a king (which isn’t a surprise) and that he missed their appointment because he was trapped somewhere (which is). The rest is cryptic and reluctant, but when Dream implies that everyone he’d ever known had either assumed he’d abandoned them or been too busy to come help him well—

    Furious doesn’t quite cover it.

    AKA: What to do when your mysterious friend who might also be a god doesn’t realise they feel betrayed.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    “You misunderstand.” The Stranger interrupted smugly, a little smile playing at the corner of his mouth. “I do step away ‘just to relax’. At least once every hundred years.”

    //

    Oh it hadn’t liked that, had the cosmos in its hands, may have wanted Hob alive but it certainly didn’t need him whole. That was perhaps the only thing that saved him; still left him pinned, a pressure to make even atoms curdle, a lesson hammered in with force when he kept resisting, when he’d fought back because of course he’d fought back.
