“I get that you're difficult by nature,” Akuna says, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor of Cal's cell next to him like they're not interrogator and prisoner, but just casual acquaintances hanging out. He cracks open his own bottle of water and takes a sip, then continues, “or Lank wouldn't be losing more of his hair trying to break you. But when I tell you to drink, you gotta drink, Kestis.”
Cal snorts. “What,” he croaks, “I have to get better so you can be the one to break me instead?”
Akuna pauses for a moment, then shrugs and nods. “Pretty much.”

An exploration of Cal and Merrin's dynamic after Survivor, with the help of a mission gone sideways, amnesia, a bad concussion, and a gnarly blaster burn. It's not easy to bring back up a tabled topic, especially one put aside by tragedy, and it gets even harder when you've made a habit of never talking about things that hurt.
