"The throbbing of Mustang's wounds echo a counterpoint against her pulse, a music created from war. His palm aches from being in this position so long, cradling her wrist, his wounds stretching uncomfortably, but he won't let go. He's been sitting in this chair by her bed, holding gently onto her wrist since she was brought in after her surgery. Twice he's been told by nurses to get back in bed, and twice he's refused.
He won't leave her side, terrified if he does that he'll lose her in the darkness forever."
In the hospital, Hawkeye and Mustang talk after the events of the Promised Day. They come to a decision that affects the both of them, and they get a little bit carried away.

"“What happened?” The sudden, familiar voice, dark with concern, nearly startled her out of her skin. She hadn't even heard him approach. Of course this was the moment Colonel Mustang had decided to leave. As if this wasn't embarrassing enough already.
“I had a rather abrupt meeting with the ground, sir.” She attempted to stand up and pretend like it was business as usual, but a wave of dizziness flooded through her body again. She settled for slumping awkwardly over her lap.
Mustang’s face came into her line of sight - he was crouched down in front of her, tense concern etched into his features. His frown was more prominent in the low light, and Riza wanted to smooth out the worry lines with her thumb.

When Lieutenant Hawkeye slips and receives a head injury just before the Winter Solstice holiday, Colonel Mustang takes it upon himself to care for her and keep an eye on her symptoms throughout the night, despite Riza's initial reservations. However, the longer they spend time together in private, the harder it is for both of them to face being apart again, culminating in some emotional revelations.
A (belated) holiday/"winter solstice" fic.
