He didn't react. He could see his eyes through the helmet darting around, slightly narrowed in thought.
"Akechi," Ren amended. His head whipped forward immediately.
Yeah, that's suspicious.
"How old are you?"
His posture tightened.
In this outfit, it was easier to tell how much skinnier he was, and how much muscle density had been lost.
And there were only so many ways someone could get shorter.

It all started out completely innocently. Really, it had! Akira and Akechi had both been looking for somewhere to live; it just made sense to move in together. And of course Akira had asked for scented items from all his friends. They’re his pack! Getting a token or two from each of them had made his nest smell familiar and safe.
And, okay, maybe he’d gotten a few more items from Akechi than anyone else, but they live together. It was just easier to get stuff from him, that’s all.

Ren lets himself fall apart for a bit, thoughts crashing and rising inside his head like raging waves. There would be no next weekend for them, he realizes — not for this Akechi and him, at least. Maybe Ren wouldn’t have a next week at all, considering he was already running on borrowed time and desperation.
He found the wrong Akechi again. He knows this. Even if his Akechi forgot everything about himself, even if he changed his identity on purpose, Ren has this feeling he could just discern the truth no matter what. He stares at this lump of joy next to him, lovely despite the furrowed brows and occasional groans, and he can tell: this is not his detective prince.(Ren walks through universes to return a leather glove, while the world he knows won’t stop crumbling all around him.)

Day Three: Inexperience
Four days.
Four days and five hundred kilometers. It doesn’t take away the shaking, the nausea, the dread. The images, flashing in Akira’s brain like a bullet. The dreams.
He’s here, but distant. Goro sleeps beside her in each hotel room they’ve paid for, buys cigarettes and food when they stop for gas, sits in the front of his motorcycle as they drive. Moves his handgun around to tuck into the side of his belt, so it wont dig into her stomach as she presses against his back. But he hasn’t kissed her. Not since they left.
Barely even touches her. She’s caught him looking. Eyes deep and heavy, perhaps with pity, perhaps with longing. Always so hidden inside his own head.
Akira just wishes Goro would say something.
