Summary
"Is it a fungus?" Charles asks.
"Or a curse," Edwin suggests, already turning back to his bookcase.
"No and no," the Night Nurse replies. “Ghosts are just thoughts, a mental awareness. If you have pain, then it is a mental pain.”

Summary
“Hey. I’ve been to literal hell for you, mate. I’m sure we can survive a ball together. And even if it’s the most bloody awful thing we’ve ever done,” which Charles doubts, given the choice of awful things they get up to in their line of work. Hell, for a start. “I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone but you. But if you really don’t want to, we can ask if Crystal -”
“No! There is no need for that, besides it is an afterlife ball, she wouldn’t be allowed in." Edwin takes a breath. He straightens his tie, taps one finger a bit nervously to the invitation. When he speaks again, his voice has softened, “Thank you, anyway. I hope it goes without saying that I feel the same way.”
In which the boys are thrown into a nice, simple case ft. the upper crust of spectral society, a cursed chandelier, and the opinionated ghost of a WWI officer. For DBDPromptober day 12: 8 ball.

Summary
And, bloody hell, he shouldn’t be tired. Ghosts didn’t need sleep. They were made entirely of energy! Charles was -
“Bollocks!” He pushed himself upright with a muffled curse and only minimal effort.
Of course, he was tired. He was tired for the first time in nearly 20 years because an angry minor deity had thrown him straight into Edwin’s energy-eating sigil. He remembered his back colliding with something solid hard enough that it dazed him; he remembered scrabbling towards the sound of Edwin’s voice, and not much beyond that.

Summary
Edwin has felt this way before: dragged along by a force beyond his control, away from the beating heart of something important that could not be left behind. The last time was in the clutches of a demon beast, all porcelain and pincers, with Charles’ name caught in his throat, half in a cry for help and half because, if these were to be his last words in this plane of existence, there was little else worth screaming.
