She looked at her hands. Spread on the table. Palms down. Nails even.
"But I'm not me."
The room was very quiet.
"The person who ran those schemes — she was awful. She was a liar and a thief and she hurt people and she enjoyed it. But she was something. She had edges. She had — chaos. She could wake up in the morning and not know what she was going to do that day."
She looked at Aizawa.
"I always know what I'm going to do. Every day. I always know. There's no — there's no room for anything else. It cleaned me out and left me tidy and now I'm tidy forever."
Silence.
"I think," she said quietly, "it was being kind."
Aizawa didn't speak.
"I think it saw everything I was and decided I wasn't worth destroying and it put me back. Neatly. Carefully. The way you'd put a book back on a shelf after you'd read it."
Her eyes were dry.
"And I think that's the worst thing anyone has ever done to me."
