“I can’t. I can’t see it. But you can.” Ray grabs Pete’s shoulder again to steady himself, but his arm crumples from trying to support his weight as he says, “That’s why I love you.”
And then there’s burning in his arm and David’s leaning back, and he knows what his line is meant to be, but instead his mouth parts in shock and he says, “…Cooper?” with a strange warmth growing in his chest.

They first met when Ray came by the bring his mom lunch. She was in the middle of her shift at the hospital, and she was in Pete’s room when Ray got there. Pete had been only a few days out of the Walk, but he had been awake, and alert enough to light up when he saw Ray walk on.
“Hey,” Pete had grinned, and it almost looked real. Ray’s eyes had caught on his scar, and he felt the strange urge to trace it with his finger. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“This is my son, Ray,” Ray’s mom had stuttered to introduce, giving Pete an apologetic look. “He’ll be on his way, he was just bringing me my lunch. Ray, this is Pete, the winner of this year’s Long Walk.”OR
Pete is a previous winner. This changes less than one might think.

Summary
Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death.
In the ruins of post-war North America, a military state known as The Capitol controls twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them to send two teenagers each year to participate in The Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death.
Eighteen year old Ray Garraty already views the Games as a death sentence, but when a boy from his past volunteers to take the place of his younger sister he knows he's a goner for sure. Ray's a survivor, everyone says so, but what does it mean to compete in a death match when the thing you're fighting for isn't your own life?

I did it, I caved and beat-for-beat re-wrote THG with Ray and Pete. But there are still some surprises in there! As of updating this description I'm officially 2/3 of the way through the book! Hunger Games fans, you know what that means!
I would call this film characterisation combined with book lore. If you haven't read the book you'll probably just presume some characters are OCs lol. And if you haven't read The Hunger Games I (albeit briefly) explain the worldbuilding lore here, so you won't be lost.
