Jon placed a glass tumbler down in front of her and started to pour amber liquid into it. He poured a double without her even having to ask.
"On the house," he said with a small smile.
"Oh, no, Jon, you don't have to - "
"I insist. It's actually our 'Unexpected Christmas Breakup' policy," he said, very seriously.
That surprised a laugh out of her - a tiny, breathy thing, but a laugh all the same.
"Thank you," she smiled, and it wasn't one she had to force. Jon's answering smile was wider, and brighter than the Christmas lights.

Summary
Steve is a prince with a uterus, but due to rampant misogyny in his father's kingdom, this reduces his rights to mere property. As property, the King of Brooklyn had the right to offer the treasure that was his only child, an insolent boy in the King's mind, to the invading conqueror Barnes as a plea for mercy. Barnes's military outnumbered Joseph's 10-1. Steve was 15, a few months from 16, and even Barnes admitted Joseph was slime for using his child as tribute.
That did not stop Barnes from actually taking Steve. Barnes, as he later admitted, was not a good man, either.
