Summary
The Districts had to know their place; if force was not the option, then they would learn through repression and humiliation. Once a year, they would send a girl and a boy to face off against children from the other districts. Tamsy was fascinated by it—especially the heartbreaking stories some could tell. He loved how teenagers could turn into fearless animals, driven solely by necessity.
Much like the matchmaking season of the Old World, or the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, Tamsy could indulge in marvelous ideas of how to ruin the life of some dishonest, pathetic liar who thought they could win with a makeshift story.
Until a completely new idea piqued her interest: The younger brother of Victors from District One, and the rebel from District 11—the victor's adopted son, Zodyl Typhon.
"Is this not an exquisite innovation, dear?"
Rudo looked at the pair on the screen; the District 1 tribute’s expression did not look like one of devoted infatuation, as his mentors claimed. The Avox beside him laughed, a sound imperceptible to everyone in that room except Rudo.
"It seems the misery is theirs. Entirely theirs."
