Summary
Dana said something in response, but Abby couldn’t hear her over the roar in her ears. Because she’d found Frank, standing next to the cooler with a water bottle in one hand, a Diet Coke in the other, engrossed in a conversation. And Abby knew who she was immediately, even if she’d never met her.

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

Summary
“Hi,” Frank says, breathless. His hair is messy, like he’d tried to ruffle it with his fingers to make it more presentable, and his shirt is askew, the neckline obviously tugged to one side.
“Hello,” Mel responds primly, behind the hulking printing press. She moves to the side of it and tangles her hands together in front of her apron.
The pair of them are sort of comical — her in full colonial garb and him in a free t-shirt from the campus gym that he clearly cut the sleeves off of, turning it into a makeshift muscle tank, with only a thin cord strung across a few wooden posts separating them.

Summary
He snorts, condescending, unconcerned. “What are you gonna do about it, kid?”
“Just give me the damn roll and I won’t have to do anything.” She puffs up her chest and squares her shoulders, trying to appear bigger. It’s something she’d gotten good at during her life at FEDRA school, which seems impossibly far away lately.
But survival instinct doesn’t ever leave you. The roll is hers.
“You’re either really brave or really stupid,” the guy comments, eyeing her with amusement.
“It's both!” she snaps. Then, she winces because that’s what came out of her mouth.
He laughs and brings the roll up to his lips.
Fuck. No.

Summary
“FEDRA Military Preparatory has an opening for guaranteed two weeks of work,” the official replies, “pays twenty cards a day.”
Joel arches an eyebrow skeptically. “What’s the catch? Good pay and guaranteed two weeks of work, and nobody wants it?”
“Not a lot of people want to work with the kids,” FEDRA guy says nonchalantly, “they’re a sad sight.”
Joel blinks. “The kids are workin’ the job?”
Shit, it’s gotta be a breeze job if they got the little rats doin’ it. Guaranteed good pay for two weeks and a lighter load? It’s a bit tempting.
“It’s all I’ve got for today,” says the official, ignoring his question, “take it or leave it.”
Against his better judgment, Joel says, “I’ll take it.”
