Jaw Man flicked his middle finger up at Ilya, who didn’t seem to mind, and gestured towards Shane and Hayden with raised eyebrows. “The f*** are you even doing right now, man.”
Ilya said briefly, “Orgy.”
“Uh,” said Shane, “no, that’s not—”
Ilya grinned at him. It was a mean-edged grin but something about it seemed to suggest that he was joking with Shane, rather than about him. “Oh, he speaks.”
“We’re not here for an orgy,” Shane said to Jaw Man. “We’re missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

Summary
The small faceless man on the instruction sheet is very confident. He holds his tiny illustrated tools with the certainty of a person who has never had a bad day. He indicates, through a series of numbered panels, that this is simple. That a reasonable person can do this. That it is, in fact, a matter of following directions.
Ilya follows directions excellently. He is a professional athlete who has spent his entire career executing instructions given under pressure. He is not intimidated by a bookshelf.
He is willing to admit now, after nearly two hours, that he is slightly intimidated by this bookshelf.

The Killing Chord strikes Jingyi’s appointed boulder. It cracks that in half, too.
Not half a second after Lan Yuan follows Jingyi into the crevice, the yaoguai strikes the stone, talons scrabbling at the crevice, beak pecking at the entrance they’ve made themselves. A red, furious, glowing eye peers in after them, and Lan Yuan stumbles back blindly, vaguely downwards. He’s staring at the entrance, at the clear and present danger. Neither of them are looking backward.
In hindsight, it’s the worst mistake they make all day.
Wei Ying has spent years sealed under a mountain. It's just his luck that the kids who break him out of it are Lans.
