    Summary

The neon “open” sign is dark. All of the lights inside the store are dark as well, at seems. So are all of the lights inside of every other store in the shopping center. Even the red bows tied to the street lamps slump like they’ve taken to bed for the night.

“Ah. That’s unfortunate,” says Xisuma, confused. Every single store? Really? It’s not that late.

His breath puffs in the evening chill. It’s good he and Evil X have got jumpers on. His even has jingle bells around the wrists; Gem told him that she stitched those on herself.

“Closed,” Evil X agrees. “On— on this of all occasions. What is the free market coming to?”

    Summary

She’s numbly aware of a shift in her life that she knows she will never, ever shake. Time itself is reframed. Slowly stepping back into the house, she glances at the clock above the oven, above the food she will never finish cooking.

It’s been fifty-two minutes since her son died.

    ——

    Or,

How the people in Ivan’s life are coping.

    Summary

Ow, what– oh, jeez, you really are upset,” Mumbo blurted, getting his legs back under him. Grian had his wings mantled, defensive like he was guarding something embarrassing, but his expression was all wrong, flinty and hotly devastated, the look of someone who’d snapped his moorings ages back. Wild. “Was I– I wasn’t under the impression that I was squishing your wings or anything, generally I thought I’d gotten better at that, but if that’s why you’ve smacked me–”

“Where am I?” Grian interrupted him. Mumbo would have been offended, but his brain was stuck on the sleep track, insistently attempting to get back onto those rails, and the sight of Grian crying was transfixing. As a rule, Grian was not a man who cried.

    Summary

The bassbeat drowned out conscious thought, and it took language with it. Grian couldn’t tell what people were saying. He could watch them, watch the colors play across cheeks and irises and the curves of strangers’ ears, their earrings, their weapons, but he couldn’t understand them. He was getting overwhelmed, and that was a bad thing. He’d worked too hard to get overwhelmed at concerts anymore.

The Watcher was up in the rafters, huddled in a corner above the sweeping lights. Grian could see him if he squinted, a darker speck of shadow in the dazzled-out gray of the venue’s high roof, but no one else would be looking. They’d go about their concert and the rest of their nights like nothing had happened, the side effects safely dispersed over a crowd of three thousand, and the Watcher would come out healthier. His cheeks would fill out a little.

He’d look more like Grian, and Grian--

Grian would look more like him.

    Summary

The bruise spreading across Grian’s face was swollen red, bound to darken into a black eye. He’d taken the blow like a champ, blinking away tears with a grimace like he’d swallowed a lemon slice, and he had bags under his eyes, clothes that weren’t his favorite sweaters or his uniform.

Scar couldn’t take his eyes off him. If Scar spoke right now, with his hand burning from the impact, it wouldn’t come out very smoothly, would it? Not the least bit reassuring, and if anyone needed reassurance, it was his friend here. He schooled his face, reminded himself where the words would have to start inside his mouth to come out clear.

Having to remind himself he was allowed to speak without prompting was definitely not a bad sign, and he didn’t mind it in the least.
