He was no one worth mentioning or knowing, he was just there.
He was born in poverty, which made him even more worthless.
He lived in a horrible, terrible world, filled with even more horrendous, terrible people. Politics and backstabbers all around.
He was good at promises. He promised to never lie to Kaa-san. He promised to Tou-san to always be respectful. He promised them both to never go further beyond the forest. He always kept his promises.
He was good at promises until he was not.
He was a quiet kid who knew a bit about the adult mechanics of the world. But he was only a child.
The world was a massive forest fire and he was just a weed in it.

“Don’t breathe.”
The rifle is heavy on Sugimoto’s shoulder, the metallic smell coming off the muzzle sharp in his nose. It cuts through everything – the sand billowing around them, the groan of the War Rig as it sinks into the mud, the adrenaline running through his veins from the sudden spray of bullets around them.
Sugimoto doesn’t trust Ogata any farther than he can throw a stone, but he knows there is no other choice here. Only one bullet left in the rifle, and Sugimoto has never seen Ogata miss a shot. And so Sugimoto does as he’s told and doesn’t move, not even when the rifle goes off and he sees the distant pinprick of light flicker out, hears the shouting of the others distantly through the ringing in his ears.
The sensation sticks with him for the rest of the night even as the ringing fades, his hearing regained. The roughened whisper of Ogata's voice in his ear, the weight on his shoulder, force of the blowback caught on his chest. He catches himself imagining the impressions long after they're faded, and he knows what Asirpa would say to him if she knew what he was thinking. Fool.
