Summary
When Shane first arrives, he is twenty-something again, tired down to the soul because he’s used it to the fullest this time. It comes back to him in increments, his history and present circumstances, because he’s not even aware he’s sitting on a park bench at first, overlooking a sky at near-dusk. He blinks into it, smiling like a dope, before remembering, right, I’ve died. It’s a matter-of-fact to him, maybe more than it should be, since he knows there will be a new life for him, waiting in the morning.
On the verge of reincarnation, Shane remembers Ilya all over again.

After that night where they decided to be friends, Shane never stops spilling out his thoughts.
Shane Hollander (ex #7): How do I convince this guy that I’m seeing that it’s totally super fucking okay to leave marks on me bc Rose Landry has taught me how to hide them using concealer?
That was the first ever text message that Shane had sent her after he came out to her.
He never mentions any names, just vague and cryptic description of what seems to be just one guy that he’s seeing. She never pushes any further, happy with the very little amount of details about this supposedly unrequited love story Shane is comfortably sharing with her. Whomever it is, Shane must have a good reason to not tell her.
She has a few ideas. Maybe it’s another closeted teammate or a childhood friend. It could also be literally anyone Shane met in clubs or press conferences or gala dinners. It could be a big celebrity. Shane is protecting them and Rose respects that.

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”
Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay. If that's what you want.”
OR: inspired by the fight in TLG where Ilya tells Shane he can sleep with other men. But this time, Shane actually takes the offer.
