Summary
Rumi pushes past the fear, past the phantom of Celine barking a warning to run, hide, cover up, do whatever she needed to do to escape this. Fleeing would be a confirmation. Hiding would be an admittance of guilt. Covering up? That, Rumi can do. She is an expert, after all.
Rumi takes a deep breath and clutches her panic close, forcing it down, down, down, until her awareness narrows to the too-steady beat of her heart, Zoey and Mira’s empty hands, and the poison that springs to her tongue like an obedient hound brought to heel.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Rumi lies.
Sick of the lies, Mira stages an intervention just before the Idol Awards. She claims she knows everything.
It might be a bluff, but the possibility is too dangerous for Rumi to ignore.
Rumi does what she does best. She lies so she can live another day.

Summary
When they roll into the parking lot, they sit in pregnant silence. Mel seems reluctant to leave, gripping the steering wheel and taking her time with her things. “I can order an Uber from here.”
“You could. Or you could stay the night,” Trinity avoids eye contact. “Dennis is out, so his room is free, and there’s a couch or--”
“Okay,” Mel smiles in what Trinity reads as relief, “Thank you for inviting me.”After karaoke, Mel spends the night, and then most of the day.

Summary
"Why don't you go shower while I get dinner started?"
Trinity's mouth opens and for a brief second, nothing comes out. It's not that she doesn't have words. She has too many words, stacked in her throat like plates she's afraid to drop—a series of things she would love to vomit at Yolanda's feet, purging them from her body so that she doesn't have to carry them around anymore. But that's not what she asked. Trinity swallows hard, choking down her desire to be difficult. Now is not the time for complaints. Instead, she forces a weary smile, and hedges, "You don't have to do that."
