    Summary

Sokka takes a strategic step back, but he also smiles: triumphant, like he baited Zuko into exactly what he wanted. Like it’s a challenge. It’s the same way he looked when they sized each other up at the prison, with Sokka in chains that left red marks around his wrist, in tattered prison garb, malnourished and angry. Back then, that was Sokka saying: I see your power. I see you. Now, see me.

Zuko saw him then. And he sees him now; different, but the same. I see you.

Zuko lights his daos in flame. Sokka grins, back to gravel and heat. “Come on, Fire Lord. Impress me.”

Zuko burns. His vision flickers with fire. His heart races. His blood sings. His body is like a magnet, pulling ever onward to meet Sokka’s. He advances.

He pins Sokka to the wall, blades against his throat.

Or, Zuko found Aang first, Sokka and Katara were imprisoned in Boiling Rock for trying to rescue their dad, and all Sokka knows is he's pretty sure he's not supposed to think the Fire Lord is attractive but he's never let things like rules stop him before.

when Zuko take a hit for Sokka mid battle Sokka storms in to the tent to give him a piece of his mind, and gets a little more back than he bargained for. (Self indulgent hurt and anxiety to smut fic, everyone is aged up a few years after the end of Last airbender.)

    Summary

[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.

It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.

When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.

“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”

Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.

A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]

Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.

    Summary

"Sokka turned a stick through the embers and said, as casually as he could manage, “You know… you don’t have to sleep alone.”

He felt Zuko go still. There was a pause.
“I don’t think your sister would appreciate me joining you.”

Sokka barked out a quiet laugh. “That wasn’t exactly what I meant.”
Zuko looked at him then, wary but listening. Sokka rubbed the back of his neck. “I mean…” He nudged a piece of wood into place. “You could stay in your room. I could join you.”"

    - Zuko stays up past everybody else. Zuko also gets up first. When his exhaustion turns into lack of concentration and losing his temper at Aang, Sokka notices that Zuko only ever falls asleep with someone near him
