He finds her on Friday, the 18th of November, 1983. She's a small kid, out in the woods and the freezing cold, the first time he's ever seen a girl with hair that short. His parents are leaving for some business trip in the morning. He is going to be alone.
She's alone.
Steve hates the idea of another kid growing up alone.(In which Steve finds Eleven in the winter of ‘83, before Hopper could, and the sudden changes that pull apart his life. Some are far deeper in the bones than he ever could've imagined.)

After being told that he has "a complete lack of philosophical thinking" by his philosophy teacher, Steve is forced to turn to the schools 'freak' Eddie Munson to tutor him. Maybe Eddie can teach Steve to think deeper and maybe he'll also help Steve to question what truly makes him happy...or who.

“It’s Jonathan Byers,” Eddie continues. “I don’t get it! You, Wheeler—What’s the appeal with this guy? What’s the allure? No offence, Byers.”
“None taken,” Jonathan says, unfazed.
“I mean, it’s like being attracted to a piece of paper,” Eddie says.
Jonathan frowns. “Some taken.”
Eddie can't wrap his head around Steve dating Jonathan. Jeff is an involuntary witness to, apparently, every single discussion about it.

Summary
It used to bother him for a while. He wanted to prove he was more than a pretty face and some muscles. Prove to his father he could take over the business when he was old enough. Prove he could become something and do amazing things just like they told every other kid. But after enough time he just got used to it. He made it a part of himself. It was easier to dumb himself down than to deal with the overwhelming feelings he felt on a daily basis. It was easier to pretend he didn’t know that his friends were hurting people. Easier to pretend he had this perfect little life in his perfect little house with his perfect little parents.
OR: I do what the Duffer Brothers couldn’t and address the Steve’s trauma :D
