Summary
It doesn’t know exactly when it started to understand.
At some point, when it’s maybe fifteen, it wonders—because it’s not as if it doesn’t hear people calling it “she” pretty much every day. Hadn’t it heard that as a kid as well? Even when it didn’t really interact with anyone, when it was too young to be around people, when there wasn’t really anyone talking about it. So it’s not like anyone has ever actually called it “it,” even though that’s what’s accurate since it isn’t a she. It can’t be—because it isn’t human. It’s a demon. It’s a monster.

Summary
She swallows hard, not even realizing where she is until Maddy’s surprised yelp sounds way closer than it should.
“Rue, what the hell are you doing? Why are you outside my window at—” She looks at the clock on her vanity— “2:30 AM?”
Maddy has a polka-dot robe on now, clutching the two sides closed to keep out the chilly night air.
Rue has stepped onto Maddy’s lawn. In front of Maddy’s window. Where Maddy can definitely see her.
Stupid.
“Uh—” she starts, scrambling, “Fuck, I didn't—I mean, it wasn't—”
Rue’s hands move in useless little gestures, like that might somehow explain things. Maddy just watches her, arms crossed, her mouth shaped suspiciously like a smile. She cuts Rue off before she can dig herself any deeper.
“Rue.”
“Yeah?”
“Do you need a place to crash tonight?”
When Rue accidentally ends up at Maddy’s house, comfort shows up wearing someone else’s perfume, and Rue pretends that doesn’t mean anything.

Summary
"You shouldn't leave your window unlocked."
Nancy's voice. Soft and strange, admonishing out of habit but nervous too, like she knew she was out of place, like she was uncertain of her authority here, in a room she'd never been in before.
"If Vecna comes after me I don't think he's coming through the window," Robin joked. It came out rough, she was barely awake and entirely confused. Nancy Wheeler was sitting on her bed. She thanked the darkness for hiding the fact that her sheets had Ninja Turtles on them. "What's going on?"

Summary
But her confusion at Steve's lack of a response and her relief at the absence of at least one of her ex boyfriends only lasted a fraction of a second until her eye was drawn to movement to the right of him, to Robin sitting up out of her own folding chair and lowering her sunglasses. Nancy caught her eyes just before she pushed the glasses back up and laid back down, not nearly as relaxed as Steve, not nearly as casual, and it hurt.
Because if Robin was here that meant it wasn't just a kids' party anymore. And if Robin was here and Nancy wasn't invited that meant that Robin was invited even while Nancy wasn't, and, maybe worst of all, it meant that Robin hadn't invited Nancy.

Summary
But what did you get for the woman who had everything? Or. Well. What did you get for a woman who only really ever left the house to kill things?
Knives? Nancy had a whole wall of knives. And she still couldn't be trusted to chop vegetables at the mess hall without cutting herself.
A fire ax? She had three. A flame thrower? Hopper was borrowing it for some kind of nest control mission last Robin knew, but yeah she had that too. Hedge clippers? A fricking... lawnmower?
