Ilya had taken one look at his calendar, and then immediately called his coach. He was sorry, he’d explained, but as he’d stated in his contract and included on his medical forms, he was legally required to have one week away from the ice every four months to support his heat partner. In the box where he’d had to fill in their name, he’d put 'Jane'.
He’d needed some time to get his affairs in order; to cancel the maid, ask someone to feed his fish and make sure he had everything that they were going to need for the coming week. Then, he’d packed up his ratty suitcase, loaded it into the trunk of his car, and hit the road. Just before he left, he sent Shane a text.
Lily: I’m on my way.

Summary
Ilya hears the door opening before he sees it. He sits up sharply, already angling his phone towards his chest, thumb hovering over the End Call button. Shane doesn’t speak, though Ilya watches his expression shift into something grave and concerned. They both know the routine at this point; it wouldn’t be the first time this week Ilya has ended a call abruptly to avoid interruption.
The head that appears in the doorway is far lower than he expects it to be, and it takes him a moment to fully register.
“Zhenya?” he asks, frowning. “Are you alright?”
The girl nods, her little hand still clutching the door handle. “Can I come in?”
Or: Shane and Ilya speak often, while Ilya is in Moscow for his father's funeral. Tonight, Ilya has company.
