Summary
For as long as he could remember, Maxwell Lightwood felt like a child of divorce, even if Maryse and Robert had refused to acknowledge the crumbling state of their marriage, let alone agree to formally separate.
He pretended not to hear their arguments all the same.
So when Robert got assigned to the Los Angeles Institute, Max pleaded with Alec to let him stay in New York.
Alexander, ever the stalwart eldest brother, was surprised. He hesitated, maybe a little too long.
The silence came with a burst of fresh hurt, and Max ran out of the head's office, out of the Institute, unarmed and into the night.
But Max didn't know that Alec could never refuse an opportunity to keep Max close. Not when it was him who rocked Max through every sleepless night, not when it was calling out to him that was Max's first word, not when it was his name that was cried out after every scrape or hurt — not their parents away in Idris.
And so Alec ran out into the streets after him.
