Summary
There are things that people take for granted without realizing. Hypothetically, it’s obvious that one would think to be grateful for what they have on occasion. For example, reading a sad story, hearing about an unfortunate accident— these are things that remind people to hold tighter to their loved ones in their hearts. Only briefly, of course. Then things go back to normal, and it’s only natural for one to be oblivious once again.
It is only when things happen— horrible, unexpected and unfortunate things— that one realizes just what they had been blind to. They’ll end up looking at the rest of the world in loathing and bitter disbelief, wondering how everyone can walk around in ignorance of what they have.
The most hatred they’ll hold will be towards their past self though. They’ll curse themselves until the day they die.
Or at least, that’s how Diluc felt when Kaeya killed himself.

Reaching home, Kaeya clicked the door locked behind him before sliding down and crying. He barely had the energy to cry, but that was all he could do anyway.
He was so exhausted. He was so lonely.
Always alone, always.
Nobody loved him much either, not as much as they loved anyone else. He knew it. He was either painfully neutral or a… nuisance.

Diluc regretted it more and more with the words that came out of his mouth but he just couldn't stop and show weakness out of nowhere. He pursed his lips as he watched Kaeya weaken but still he didn't take it back.

But Diluc is still looking at him expectantly, a softness smudging his features until he is recognizable again, until he is just his older brother again, calling out to him as they collect seashells on the beach. If Kaeya tries really hard, he can imagine that Diluc is simply trying to put a bandage on a scratch on his knee, a wound from running too fast trying to keep up with him. He imagines the tears rolling slowly down his face, the saltiness staining the corner of his mouth. He imagines Diluc saying, Oh, I’m sorry, Kaeya, I should’ve let you catch up. Don’t cry, Kaeya, please.
