“Oh for the love of—” Sebastian cut himself off, quickly drawing his wand from his sleeve and pointing it at your chest. Images danced behind his eyes; Solomon destroying the plant that could have cured Anne; The blurry image of the goblin that had cursed his sister running from the house, cackling in villainous mirth; finding his parents bodies in the cellar, thick plumes of colored toxic smoke spewing from their cauldron. His vision faded to a striking black. White hot pokers stabbed into his temples, and he cast his wand at you in a blind rage.

You turned your head. Not too much, but enough. You know you did.
"Green light."
The pain of falling hits you before you can register anything. Then-- nothing. Everything slows. The world distorts, as if you're underwater. A deep, suffocating silence swallows you whole. Your ears ring, high-pitched relentless. It drowns out everything else.
You blink. Once. Twice. The ground beneath you feels too solid, too real.
Someone grabs your arm. Their lips move, shaping words you can't hear, The world is muffled, warped, like a dream just out of reach. You look down. 456. The number stares back at you from the jacket of the man crouching in front of you. Your breath catches. The air is thick-- wrong. Like you're choking on the aftermath of something you weren't meant to survive.
You know it. You moved. You felt it. The misstep, the shift of your head.
So why are you behind the finish line; safe as a kitten?
