When they got back into the city proper, Varric asked if he was going to see Anders at the next weeks Wicked Grace night, as the whole gang promised to be there. Anders wasn't sure who 'the whole gang' was exactly, but if he had any more impossibly attractive friends here, then he wasn't going to pass up the chance to meet them.
Hawke turned to the elf. “Fenris, you okay to head to Hightown by yourself? I'm going to walk Anders to his clinic,”
“Great, because I would love the company,” Anders said quickly. And the directions, he thought. “To my, uh, clinic... that I run?” he had tried not to let the sentence end like a question, but he was afraid that the upwards infliction had given him away. The thing was, Anders had never expected the moment to happen mid-sentence, over a lie so innocuous. He’d always expected something grander, or at least more concrete. A warm, shared knowing the moment of meeting. Sparks. Or anything other than spilling your guts without warning. The sudden, jarring inability to shape a lie for the one person the universe had arbitrarily decided mattered.
Despite his later cynical misgivings, he’d grown up imagining finding his soulmate would feel like falling in love. But he was quickly finding that it felt more like being undressed in public.

Anders never expected Fenris to want him and, even once he had him, Anders didn't expect it to last. He expected it to end at any moment, to disappoint Fenris or disgust him. So he hid something from him, that he's trans, and almost ruined it anyway.
