Eternal slumber was meant to be his atonement. He had failed to intervene, at possibly the most pivotal moment in time. Failed to stop Lucrecia. Failed to prevent the experiment. For his sins, he would no longer have any influence on the world.
Except, in his absence, arguably worse sins piled up.
Sephiroth’s madness. Jenova’s release. Meteor.
Isolation, as it happened, did not work as atonement. His lack of involvement hadn’t fixed anything.
He knew better, this time.

Sephiroth was Hojo's son. But he was also Lucrecia's. And that was why, given a chance, Vincent would try to save him. That was why, given a chance, he would go back and try to help keep him on a better path.
Because when you loved someone, and they were gone, you made sure their kids were okay. And he should have realized that the first time around.

“You know what I mean.”
He snickered, shaking his head, but the smile slipped from his lips as they settled into a neutral line. He leaned on his cane to look up at the sky.
“I don’t. I mean, not really. People think it’s this majestic, all knowing force, but it’s a lot more like a child, always watching, always learning. When it connects with us, it tunes into every fiber of our being. It doesn’t know anything at first, we shape it with our every thought, our every use, every action. We’re its compass, moral or otherwise. You know what they say, what goes around comes around, that’s very literal here. I just…learned that a lot sooner than others do. They take from the world, so it learns to take. I give of myself, and only myself, so it gives in return…"
He glanced down at his hands, examining them carefully as they glowed faintly in the moonlight.
"...at least, that’s what I tell myself. That’s what I hope is the truth.”
