    Summary

Dennis Whitaker has never needed fate to tell him who he’s meant to be.
    Doctor. Full stop.

He just really didn’t expect that on his very last rotation of medical school, his new attending would casually speak the words inked around his bicep.
    ---
Robby has spent years believing soulmates and fate are for two kinds of people: fools and the forgiven. It’s easier than admitting what it would mean if the words on his ribs weren’t a mistake.

    It’s simple, really:
Whitaker’s his mentee. His legacy, maybe.
    Not his soulmate.

And if Robby has to burn down every possibility to keep it that way, he will.

He stared blankly at a water stain on the ceiling tiles, momentarily unable to distinguish his own exhausted pulse from the din of beeping monitors. The scene seemed to move in slow motion around him, the panicked pace of the staff contrasting with his own stillness. He focused intently on the discolored spot on the ceiling, finding a strange, hypnotic comfort in its fixity while the world around him rushed by.

Robby stood just out of earshot, leaning over a tablet, mid-spiel instructing Javadi over a patient’s CT results. The hum of their conversation was interrupted by two sharp, impatient clicks of a tongue.

“Could I get a name for the order?” Marlene asked.

“Serious,” the man replied. “Like the star,” he clarified, and Remus mentally scratched out 'Serious' and rewrote 'Sirius' in his head.

“The… star?” Marlene asked, her pen hovering over the cup as she hesitated.

“S-I-R-I-U-S,” Remus said. He stocked croissants into the display case, not looking up. “The Dog Star,” he added, “brightest star in the sky, actually. Visible from both hemispheres.” When he looked over, the man– Sirius– seemed surprised, his eyebrows raised as Remus spoke, and when Remus finished, he blinked a few times before smiling lopsidedly.

“Er– yeah,” he breathed a laugh. “That.” There was a baby on his hip. Somehow, it had taken Remus a second glance to notice that.

    ---

Or, Remus works as a barista and Sirius comes in every morning with the world's cutest baby, and man, these two just wrote the book on mutual pining, huh?

    Summary

“I haven’t really been to a wedding where I’ve, uh… let loose. But, hey,” Dennis shrugged, “maybe I’m doing it wrong.”

“If I hadn’t already agreed to go to this conference, I’d offer to go with you,” Robby said casually. “Show you how it’s done. I’ve got a good track record as a plus-one, too.” Dennis had to say something. To interrupt. To shut this down. But what was he supposed to say? No, you can’t be my plus one, because I lied about my cousin, and there is no wedding, and it seems a little weird to bring a date to a fucking funeral– “Apparently parents love it when you bring home a doctor.”

And just like that, the bubble popped.

    “I’m not gay,” Dennis snapped.

He had never hated the sound of his own voice as much as he did right then.

    ---
Or, Dennis is anxiously headed home for a "wedding" in Broken Bow, Nebraska, the details of which are increasingly fuzzy. Robby's got a medical conference in Omaha that same weekend. So they carpool. Seventeen hours both ways in an enclosed space with no way out except a tuck and roll. This'll go great.
