‘…H-how am I still alive?’ Zuko thinks.
Sokka flinches back. Whoaaa, how in Spirits name did Zuko project his voice like that? Sokka didn’t even see him move his lips.
As if he can hear Sokka’s thoughts, Zuko turns his head to look directly at him, eyes bewildered.
And this is where Sokka realises something is very, very wrong.
Two minutes later: “No way!” Sokka shakes his head wildly, just as prince jerkbender across him curses. “I’m soul bonded- To him?! No way! That’s just spirit mumbo-jumbo!!!”
-or, through some freak Spirit accident involving Zhao, the Avatar, and the continuous joke that is both their existence, Sokka and Zuko have been soul-bonded and mentally linked. Neither of them are particularly happy with this.

Summary
After the events of War Crimes, Sokka and Zuko have escaped Zhao’s warship and are fleeing across the Earth Kingdom. As well as unfamiliar terrain, they have to navigate their shared trauma, work out where they fit into the war, and their place in each others lives.
Sokka is aware that being friends with the enemy is going to bring complications, but he probably should have guessed that being friends with Zuko in particular, was going to be a bit like dunking your head repeatedly into a bucket of angry Fire Ferrets.
Katara is also grappling with the confusion of befriending an enemy, something that doesn’t prove as difficult as she had expected with the bond of shared, furious grief bridging old wounds. (Learning a new way to look at her bending doesn't hurt either)
Azula, struggling with the Fire Lord’s mistrust, encounters a few nasty surprises and has to make some difficult decisions. Luckily, she is a great deal better at making sensible choices than her brother.
Her father may have made a slight tactical error.

Summary
Book one ends with two major diffrences: 1. Sokka went on the mission with Hahn (it did not go well) 2. Zhao survives the North Pole and that proves unfortunate for everybody (except Zhao, obviously)
Imprisoned on Zhao’s war ship, Sokka and Zuko have to work together to survive. They are not very enthusiastic about this prospect.
And they argue.

The Gaang had noticed Zuko was distant and avoided them. He was scared of them.
(little snippit cause I'm quirky)
Zuko hesitated. He wasn’t sure how comfortable he felt talking about something this...traumatic? Zuko had nightmares about this; he couldn’t just blatantly throw it out there. He could have given them anything they wanted except this. They wanted to know about his mother? Fine! They wanted to know about the first time he was nearly assassinated? Fine! His father trying to shoot lightning at him when he knew Zuko wasn’t able to redirect it? Perfectly fine. His banishment was different.
