Summary
Last evening, Alphinaud Leveilleur was relaxing in an inn room in Kugane, preparing to soon meet with the Garlean embassy. This morning, he awoke outside the city walls with blood on his tongue, a carcass nearby, and no memory of the previous night.
Needless to say, this derailed the plan greatly.
Now, it is his duty to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. A task made more difficult when nobody seems able to identify the nature of the threat they face.

Summary
This series is based on the book series called His Dark Materials. In these books, each human's soul exists outside of their body and are called 'dæmons'. Dæmons can shapeshift into any animal form as children until their human reaches puberty. At some point during puberty, dæmons choose a forever animal shape to 'Settle' as. Their permanent animal shape is representative of their human.
It’s taboo to touch another person’s dæmon since it’s their soul. If someone does touch another’s dæmon it’s usually a) a form of abuse, or b) a show of trust and love. How the touching feels is dependent on the person doing the touching and their intentions.

Summary
When Nidhogg attempts to raze the village of Ferndale, he is slain by the Azure Dragoon, Ser Alberic Bale, who vanishes in the process. Estinien Varlineau, all of twelve summers at the time, loses his parents. By Halone's grace, his brother Hamignant lives through the attack. Taken in by their aunt, who has little idea what to do with two children, the three are forced to try their best to understand each other and keep their little steading afloat.
One year later, Archbishop Endalim V declares an advent for the Feast of Saint Alberic and pilgrims descend on Ferndale to celebrate in the very place Nidhogg was slain. Among them is the Viscountess de Borel, four knights of her House, and her young son, Aymeric de Borel.

Ameliance Leveilleur is the most beautiful woman Thancred has ever met, and if he was still a crude-mouthed wharf-rat he would pass over her purse on sheer admiration. He is no thief, though.
