He raises an eyebrow at her in surprise. “No kidding. You didn’t really, y’know, strike me as the type.”
“The type to enjoy America’s favorite pastime?” Her tone was doing that sing-song thing he was starting to realize was the way she teased, leading the other person to realize how phenomenally stupid their question actually was. “Everyone likes baseball, Lieutenant.”
He huffs out a laugh. “Well yeah, but you’re, y’know–” She half-turns in the passenger seat next to him, watching him with an expression he’s seen in interrogation more than once, the one that she pastes on while their suspect talks themselves into a corner. On the receiving end of it now, he’d say just about anything to get her to stop looking at him like that. He reaches for his coffee and takes a healthy swig, avoiding her eyes. “Never mind, Captain.”

The lamplight caught her face, illuminated the line of her jaw and the curve of her cheek. It was red and purplish, swollen beyond recognition, a cut beneath her eye where the rim of her glasses sat on her cheek.
He was in front of her, toe to toe, hand raised and hovering just above her cheek, terrified to touch the injured skin for fear of hurting her further.
“Who did this?” His voice was low and rough, teeming with righteous fury. His fingertips just brushed the angry red-purple bruises mottling her skin. She hissed and jerked away, eyes slipping closed against the brief flash of pain.
“Andy…”
“Who?”
