The listing went out to the appropriate places and an interview was held for a measly four candidates, of which three did not turn up. So, that was that.
Randy's first impression of the new boy, because he was a boy, was the memory that he was the same young man that he’d seen stabbing the end of a penknife into his thumb outside of the lonesome gas station where he filled up his car after work. He’d made brief eye contact with him and then scurried off because the smile he’d gotten in return had made the ends of his hair frizz and his stomach turn. The car he drove was old, a manual transmission, and after he’d fumbled with his keys and got the car going, he had stalled the engine twice with the thought of the tip of the knife slicing through the boy’s thumb.

Bruce shrugged. "Won the lottery, and first-place prize is the government marries me off to an alien."
(Or: in a universe where Krypton took an extra thirty-odd years to implode, Kal-El was sent to Earth as an adult, in advance of the ship containing the only other surviving Kryptonians; and a quirk of Kryptonian law means negotiating refuge, potential resettlement, and an alliance with the Kryptonians in general is dependent on marriage between a Kryptonian and a human. Bruce did what it took to make sure that that human would be him, instead of some poor unprepared civilian—but his efforts to learn more about the aliens, what they want and why they're here, and how, if necessary, to kill them ... don't go the way he's expecting them to.)

Summary
Clark comes back a little bit wrong—or maybe more than a little bit. He poses a danger to anybody close to him, in more than one way. There's only one person he can think of who's learned enough about Kryptonian biology to help him and isn't currently in prison; and Wayne owes him, anyway. At least he won't have to feel guilty about lashing out anymore, if he's doing it at the guy who tried to kill him.
Except "lashing out" doesn't really cover it, after a while—and maybe Wayne's in over his head just as far as Clark is.
