"Of all the ridiculous, risky things I expect of you, gambler," he said, slowly and deliberately, "bringing a trained assassin to your own home — one that attempted to kill you mere hours ago, no less — was decidedly not on the list of things I ever anticipated."
The tone was scathing, harsh and reproachful, but it did little to faze the smaller man, whose smile never faltered. "One of these days I'm going to teach you that to gamble well means being able to anticipate any outcome, no matter how ridiculous or impossible it might seem."
While on their first field assignment since Penacony, Aventurine and Ratio are surprised to encounter a vengeful Avgin mercenary. As soon as she speaks, however, a name and face from the past spring instantly to Aventurine's mind — that of his supposedly dead sister, Kadriya. In what proves to be the biggest gamble of his life, he strikes a deal with her to convince her to come back to Pier Point with him, even though he can't be sure of her actual identity. What follows is a tense and chaotic ride that none of them expected, filled with mystery, secrets, distrust… and regret.

Summary
Aventurine is not in the habit of allowing himself to want. Wanting is dangerous. Yearning is a vulnerability. Desires are weak points that can be exploited by others and used to take advantage and control. The responsible thing to do is to stamp them out, rid himself of them in such a way that the fantasies and the delusions are no longer appealing.
That’s what he should do. That’s what he’s trying to do. But somewhere deep in his small, hollow little heart, there’s somehow just enough of a soft core left to hope.
Hope is almost as dangerous as want.
After Penacony, Aventurine takes on the biggest gamble of his life — his heart, soul, and desires laid out on the table. He only does it because he doesn't expect Ratio to match his wager. But not only does the good doctor match it, he raises the stakes so far beyond what Aventurine could have ever allowed himself to dream of winning.

Summary
It’s likely that the Aventurine of a few years ago, were he approached with the question, would have laughed off the idea of him, of all people ever having a child. That was a fantasy and his place, simply not reserved within it. Besides, his inclinations would not allow for that, not that adoption was not an achievable feat if he tried hard enough, but that he had another personal flaw. Had he wanted a family, he would have wanted something that was his, so that he could atone for his sins in a tangible way. But even he knew that that was a catastrophic idea, and besides, who would want another one of his kind in the world?

When they first start dating, Aventurine has trouble accepting Ratio's affection. Luckily, the doctor is as creative as he is clever and headstrong. In the end, it only takes a slightly adapted game of 'Truth or Dare' to slowly fix their issues.

What the hell kind of nickname was that? Did this Ratio think it was funny to use her brother’s vices as a term of endearment?
(A vice that Vashara was pointedly trying to ignore. Kakavasha had placed bets in his youth, sure. But now, it seemed everything he spoke about was done with the excuse to make one more bet. They spent hours playing card games, he balanced dice and chips between his fingers with a deftness she couldn’t hope to emulate. It was disconcerting, and, like the absolute coward she was, Vashara acted as if she hadn’t noticed a thing.)
They went back and forth like that for a few more minutes, but the conversation had fizzled out decently fast after that. Ratio had work to do and Kakavasha wanted to keep showing her around, but Vashara had walked away from it with a deep truth settling in her bones.
She, Vashara of Sigonia, hated Veritas Ratio with every part of her being.
Aventurine's sister is alive and is overjoyed to finally reunite with her brother after all these years. She's less thrilled about his choice in partners.
