    The child should have been scared, and they were, but they could see something glint in the eyes of the creature, the same curiosity that had put them in this situation.

    And, while everyone else saw the Sphinx as an impassive monster, the child could see the cracks on her mask once they offered a riddle of their own in exchange. What others thought was a feral sneer, with teeth bare and ready to rip and tear, they could see as delight due to someone treating it, her, like an individual for the first time in well over a decade.

    Neither of them knew that their lives would now be intertwined, meeting through the years, growing together and apart, building something that would outlast them both.
